HELLP is sometimes thought to be a variant of Preeclampsia, but is considered by some doctors to be separate from Preeclampsia. The cause of HELLP is still unclear and is often misdiagnosed as gastritis, flu, acute hepatitis, gall bladder disease, or other conditions.
HELLP stands for "HEMOLYSIS ELEVATED LIVER ENZYMES LOW PLATELET COUNT". In a nutshell HELLP affects your blood cells and liver, and can lead to any or all of the following:
- blood clots
- kidney failure
- liver rupture
- lung failure (in mother and baby)
- fluid in the lungs
- renal failure
- excessive bleeding
- placental abruption (when the placenta detaches from the uterus before the baby is born)
- death (source here)
Though not usually fatal, HELLP can kill you and/or your baby. Educate yourself! Do you know what to look for? Women often mistake the signs of HELLP for Flu symptoms, so it is so important to share this information with other women who may be pregnant or plan on getting pregnant. Talk to your healthcare provider about HELLP!
